Yeah, I know it's nowhere near my usual stuff. Please read the following for details.
Rob Liefeld is easily one of the most controversial people working in the comics industry today. His brash and in your face style made him an X-Men/Image Comics superstar in the 90s, but nowadays he catches a lot of flack on the internet for his loose style, late books, and, um, unusual anatomy interpretations. If you don't know who Liefeld is check out this link... [link] So I was in a message board discussion once and there were some strong opinions going around about Liefeld. Eventually we decided it's best to walk a mile in someone's shoes first so we had an art challenge to draw a character in the Liefeld style. This is my entry, and to be true to Liefeldian form I did the entire pic - research, sketch, ink, scan, resize, upload, and link - in about an hour. It was fun to do but actual pretty tough to attempt to capture the style of this much talked about creator. Beyond that it's an exercise in early 90s comic art: overinflated boobs, impossibly arched back, big hair, superfluous lines, and all. Pen on paper. |

Slade: I made you my apprentice. All my knowledge, all my power, all for you. But the only thing you care about is your worthless little friends!
We had a saying at JKS -- "Bad is not a style." This was said by multiple teachers (including Joe himself), and often in reference to Mr. Liefeld.
No one can deny he was a successful dude, though.

Only later did everyone look back and go "oh... wait... that wasn't great."
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that McFarlane had just as many acts of aggression against proper anatomy -- but somehow, he was more dynamic than Liefeld, so everyone just let it slide. But seriously, his characters had muscles that didn't exist, and faces that radically changed from one panel to the next.
